The squash section’s annual handicap tournament ended in October after two months of frenetic squash activity. This year’s event saw a new scoring introduced to challenge the stronger players even further in a test of patience, concentration and endurance as they battle to overcome a score differential against their opponents.
64 players entered from across the spectrum of Men’s Division 2 to 15, Ladies and Juniors, battling it out for the title of 2014 Squash Handicap Cup Champion.
Tim Fan (Division 2) has claimed this title for the past 3 years, but with a handicap score of -63 every match was an uphill struggle. Some exceptional displays of solid squash saw him reach the semi-finals, but he met his match in Julian Tanner (Division 6) and could not overcome a start score of -47 v +4.
In the other half of the draw, Andrew Ward (also Division 2) fought well to reach the semi-finals. Wardy met Mike Shilton (Division 10) in the semi-final with a start score of -53 v +5, and we saw Mike triumph to reach the final.
The final saw Julian and Mike starting on -8 v 0, and could have been over very quickly as Mike had beaten Julian recently in a regular scoring game! However Julian dug deep and over an hour later came off court the victor, 3-1 in games. Congratulations to Julian as the 2014 Squash Handicap Cup Champion, and to Mike as runner-up.
Plate Winner Eric Ho with Organiser Jon Pipe
In the plate, Eric Ho reached the final by over-turning huge point deficits of -55 and -56 against Rachel Sutcliffe and Iris Sung respectively, both putting up a good fight and taking Eric to the wire. In the final, Eric played Allen Lam and had a start score of -33 v +3. In an epic battle that lasted over 100 minutes and Eric winning over 225 points, Eric took the title of 2014 Squash Handicap Plate winner. A very big well done to Allen who brought along his fan club who cheered every point along the way, and put in an excellent performance and out-played Eric in several rallies!
Thanks to all who entered and made it another great tournament, and congrats to all the winners and runners ups!
