The first day of the tournament was held on Sunday at HKFC and saw some great squash and it was reinforced that the Indonesians are a National squad at the end of the first two sessions with 4 of the top 6 places in both competitions being taken by them.
With the exception of Rosie Hamilton who is currently placed second, the Army had a quiet day having only arrived from the UK on the previous evening. We can expect a far fresher team of players on Saturday, looking for revenge!
In the ladies competition our girls did us proud; 11 year old Renee Wu (FC) vs. Rosie Hamilton (Army no1 and previously England standard junior player) produced the best match of the first session going down 11/9, 11/7, 7/11, 16/14! A prolific talent for the future. In the second session, the best match came from Yessy Gitawati (INA) vs. Anthea Yung (FC) who was so narrowly defeated in a marathon 11/6, 16/18, 12/10, 12/14, 11/8.
A similar story in the men’s competition where the best match of the first session was produced when Eris Setiawan (INA) beat Lincoln Chan (FC) in another marathon 9/11, 11/8, 12/10, 10/12, 11/9. And in the second session Tim Fan (FC) went down in 5 games to Sandi Arishma (INA) producing a most entertaining match.
So, in the four sessions of the day, the best match in each featured an FC player, and in each case we came in second! Our players need your support, please get down on Saturday at 1.15pm to cheer them on!
There is plenty of local action to support on Saturday, with our No1 Ho Fai Chiu (FC) currently placed number 1 in the men’s competition and Chan Ho Ching (HK Sports Institute) placed number 1 in the Ladies competition. In addition Anthea Yung (FC), Kristy Chung (FC), Malcolm Kerr (FC) and Tim Fan (FC) are still in the hunt for top 5 places.
The final of the ladies event will be this Saturday at 3.30pm on court 7, followed by the men’s final at 4.45pm.
