LADIES’ CAPTAIN END OF SEASON REPORT By Rachel Sutcliffe

This season HKFC ladies’ section fielded 6 teams:

  • Div L1 – 1 team
  • Div L2- 3 teams
  • Div L3 – 2 teams

Additionally, 7 ladies played in a mixed team for M4.

Whilst there have been no league winners this year, L3A and L2A both qualified for the playoffs. L3A lost in the first round to HKCC L3, won in the semis against HKFC L3B and lost in the Finals against HKCC L3

L2A won the first round of the play offs. However, they lost to KCC by 3-1 in the second round.

Div 1 – L1 was fifth competing against World Ranked players in Hong Kong’s professional squash league; this is a better placing than season 2015/16, and the team also won 2 games this season.

The final team positions for the 2016-17 season are:

  • Division 1 – HKFC will retain a Div 1 team, but will seek to strengthen this by bringing in some elite players, currently training at the HK Sports Institute (it is likely we will have one player over 21 and the other under 21).
  • Division 2 – HKFC will retain 3 teams, playing on a Tuesday night. Each with 4 players. There will be free movement of players between Div 3 and Div 2, which means we can support Div 3 players to develop through the opportunity to play against Div 2 players. All Div 2 teams will field strong number 1s and 2s; this has been agreed across the participating clubs, so that teams are more equal, and competition will be increased.
  • Division 3 - these matches will stay on Friday nights but teams will be reduced to 4 players. HKFC will field 3 teams; this creates two additional weekly playing positions.
  • Overall the above will increase the number of HKFC ladies’ teams from 6 to 7

We are sorry to see some members leave at the end of this season, notably Vivi Thomas, whose enthusiasm and commitment to the section over the past three seasons has been constant and much appreciated, and Elizabeth Pompea who has contributed significantly to L2A’s success over the last three seasons. Natalie Organ will also be missed as she heads off to University in the autumn.

We welcome Gemma Sung back from her year in France.

Last but not least, and very importantly, I would like to thank everyone who has helped me again this season. Particular thanks go to the teams’ Convenors – for their hard work this season –and of course to all our team players, without whom there would be no competitive squash. It has been particularly good this season to see the effort and commitment made by our new members.

I would also like to thank Emma Duncombe in her role as Ladies’ Vice Captain, and the Squash Section Committee for their help and support.
